Mechanism of medicine action:
Raloxifene works by selectively binding to estrogen receptors in various tissues, mimicking some of the beneficial effects of estrogen, particularly on bone. This selective action results in decreased bone resorption and turnover, thereby enhancing bone mineral density and reducing the risk of fractures in postmenopausal women. Additionally, it may inhibit estrogen-responsive tumors such as certain types of breast cancers.
Indications:
Raloxifene is indicated for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Moreover, it is used to reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer in women who are postmenopausal and have osteoporosis, providing dual benefits in bone health and breast cancer risk management.
Contraindications:
The use of Raloxifene is contraindicated in individuals with a history of venous thromboembolism (e.g., deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism), as it can increase the risk of thromboembolic events. It is also contraindicated in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as in patients with known hypersensitivity to Raloxifene or any of its excipients.
Precautions:
Caution should be exercised when prescribing Raloxifene to patients with risk factors for stroke or those with a family history of breast cancer. Additionally, regular monitoring for signs of thromboembolic events and periodic assessment of bone density is recommended while on therapy.
Drug interactions:
Raloxifene may interact with other medications, including anticoagulants and estrogen-containing therapies, potentially increasing the risk of thrombosis or altering the efficacy of either therapy. Concurrent use with certain medications such as bile acid sequestrants may reduce the absorption of Raloxifene and therefore its effectiveness.
Dosage:
The typical dosage of Raloxifene is 20 mg taken orally once daily, with or without food. The duration of therapy should be based on clinical assessment and response, generally continuing for as long as the benefits outweigh the risks.
Storage:
Store in a dark, dry place, at room temperature. Do not refrigerate. Keep out of reach of children.
